Manila, Philippines — LCS Group, representing undefeated Filipino junior lightweight #1 contender Charly “The King’s Warrior” Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs), is requesting immediate clarification from the World Boxing Organization (WBO) regarding the status of the mandated rematch with Emanuel Navarrete.
This request follows the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) reversal of the first fight, the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) regulatory standard, and newly reported unification plans being advanced without Suarez’s agreement.
The Controversial First Fight: Facts, Rulings, and Standards
On May 10, 2025, Suarez challenged Navarrete for the WBO World Junior Lightweight Title at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The bout was stopped at 2:01 of Round 8 due to a cut over Navarrete’s left eye, which referee Zachary Young incorrectly ruled an accidental headbutt, sending the fight to the scorecards. Navarrete was awarded a technical decision by official scores of: 77–76, 78–75, 77–76 (all for Navarrete).
Video review later confirmed the cut was caused by a clean left hand punch from Suarez. On June 2, 2025, the CSAC overturned the bout to a No Contest, confirming the referee’s call was incorrect.
ABC Rule Underscores the Seriousness of the Error
According to the ABC Regulatory Guidelines:
“When a cut is produced by a legal punch and the fight is stopped because of that cut, the injured boxer shall lose by Technical Knock-out (TKO).”
While CSAC elected the No Contest remedy, this standard highlights how significant the officiating error was, and why the WBO’s immediate rematch order must be upheld.
Despite that order, no date, venue, or timetable has been communicated to Team Suarez.
Documented Delays and Conflicting Negotiations
On October 30, 2025, the WBO granted Navarrete’s camp a 15-day extension to finalize rematch terms. That deadline has passed without any response to Team Suarez.
Meanwhile, Top Rank and Navarrete have continued forward with a WBO/IBF unification with Eduardo Núñez, reportedly sanctioned for February 28, 2026, despite:
- An existing, active WBO rematch order
- No step-aside agreement with Suarez
- No communication from the WBO addressing Suarez’s mandatory rights
Top Rank also offered Suarez an unranked, non-mandatory bout in Las Vegas, which Team Suarez declined due to the active rematch mandate.
Statements from Team Suarez
Charly Suarez
“I’m ready to fight. I earned the rematch, and all I want is the chance the WBO already granted,” said Suarez.
Coach Delfin Boholst
“CSAC made it clear the cut came from a clean punch. Under U.S. rules that’s a TKO. The WBO ordered the rematch, and we are simply asking for the process to be respected,” stressed coach Delfin Boholst.
“We respect the sport, but the mandatory challenger cannot be moved aside while unification plans advance. The ABC rule is clear, CSAC’s ruling is clear, and the WBO’s order is clear. What’s not clear is why we have received no response while another fight is being planned without our agreement,” added Suarez manager Ricardo Navalta.
